Are the healthy foods making us sick?

Image
Why do you eat?  Is it because you're hungry? Do you just want to fill your stomach? Do you want to experience different tastes and cuisines?  Whatever the reason, we all have to eat. It's how we fuel our bodies to stay alive, or is it? Nowadays, even the foods we eat and their origins are questionable. To earn a living, many entities are producing GMO foods where GMO = genetically modified organisms.  They are in our plants and vegetable selections, and the experimentation continues. So the questions remain: What are we really eating? Are these foods good for us to consume?  What are the effects of eating GMO products - short and long-term? One last question.  How does it impact us living in the Caribbean? Many jump on the bandwagon from the standpoint of ignorance instead of seeking to do their own research. I'm no expert, but there may be a correlation between these foods and the chronic communicable diseases that so much of the population seems to be experie...

Eating to Live or Living to Eat

Image
This topic is more accurate than we think. We are noticing it everywhere we go. In some instances, we see gluttony taking over—people seem to be eating for the sake of eating. There was once a time when we would have something to eat when we were hungry.  For some, the opportunities are diverse, depending on the country you are in. Some have more than enough, and others have to be more creative in how they access food.  The food ranges from: Haute cuisine/Fine dining Home cooking  Street food  Fast food  and these are in broad categories  They cater to diets in a variety of ways: Traditional/cultural [locals, visitors]  Healthy [fitness, healthcare including restricted]  Fad  In some cultures, the ingredients used in the foods are making them harmful. Notably, sugars and salts are those which dominate and are said to be among the most harmful.  As we age, various parts of our body will being to fail. This will require a change in d...

Though we have good foods are we eating healthy?

Image
Can we say we know enough about our bodies to nourish them effectively? Most would automatically say yes. However, closer examination would reveal that we are far from that mark.  Recently, I had an experience which made me realize that sickness is no respecter of a person. It doesn't matter your body type, fitness level, age, or anything else. When it's ready for you, it comes.  When we have to eat differently, and we are taking notice, we realize that we really overdo it when it comes to how we eat and how we manage our diets.  There are many diet types, and most use the same basic foods worldwide. These include fruit, vegetables, meat, carbohydrates, and grains. However, the application of these foods, along with the needs of our bodies, should determine the diets we use.  Yet many of us flaunt these rules and throw them out the window in search of better tastes or our default diets, to which we have become accustomed, which has given us health challenges i...

Playing with food - Traditional Vs Innovative

Image
Some diehards will never, if ever, vary from the native tastes to which they have become accustomed. They want their foods to follow the traditional tastes and presentations which they became used to during their childhood.  They remember their grandparents and other nostalgic moments and often associate them with the food and beverages of the period.  Here in Barbados, Saturdays have become synonymous with pudding and souse, on other days there are macaroni pie and baked chicken. Some menus are described by the overarching brand of Bajan Food.  Nowadays, the younger generation is more adventurous. They may not be able to prepare the traditional dishes, yet they recognize they need more. They crave innovation. Some have even developed interests where they are referred to by their peers as "foodies".  To hear them speak, they sound like authorities on food, even venturing to pair food and beverages, suggesting what can be used at various occasions and functions....
